I joined NAWJ in 1995 when I was first appointed as a judge in the District of Columbia. I joined NAWJ together with my mother, Justice Laura D. Blackburne, Ret., who was elected as a judge in New York State that same year. We became the first mother-daughter judge team in the entire country, and I was thrilled that we joined NAWJ together. I joined NAWJ because of its strong commitment to the rule of law and equal access to justice, which have always been important issues in my life, and because of NAWJ's mission to promote a more diverse judiciary. Working with NAWJ and meeting women judges from across the country has had a profound impact on my judicial career
